Jay & Bean at town

Jay and Bean, unaware of Ravina’s sandy little problem, arrived at the gates of Nottinghill and were greeted with an alarming sight: a small caravan was being set up by guards, and new wanted posters papered the city walls. Ravina and Pete were now worth 1,000 gold each, Dead or Alive.

Jay sidled up to the guards and jovially greeted them. He learned that they were setting out to investigate some potential locations that Ravine might be using as a lair. He brought that news back to Bean, and they put their heads together. They decided to send Windy back to Odds with a note around her neck, The note would warn the bastion of incoming guards.

Warning sent, Jay & Bean headed through the gates and split up to start the rummor campaign.

The McCaw

Jay arrived at the McCaw and was met by the owner, who offered Jay a deal. Rather than show up each day, Jay could take home a barrel, fill it up, then bring it back in a few days. Jay was intrigued, and bartered 3 barrels for 20 gold plus a cart.

Petunia arrived shortly after the deal was struck. The little maid mouse got Jay alone and confided in him her worries and information she had picked up. Jay learned:

  • Whovette, the scrying owl, works closely with the sheriff – they might have struck some kind of deal
  • Petunia was scared that Lady blackberry was running out of time
  • Petunia/Blackberry wanted to hire Ravina and crew to save Blackberry

Jay took Petunias money (2,200GP) to hold safe, and told her that there was a plan in the works to save Blackberry. He gave her instructions, then sent her on her way.

With Petunia gone, Jay set to his next task – stoking pro-Reed sentiment. He found, much to his heart-warming surprise, that he wasn’t alone in doing so. Radish Reed, clean and presentable, was no longer moping in his corner. The ex-mayor was at a table full of guards that he was chatting with.

The Church of Sol

Bean arrived at the Church of Sol and asked to speak to Father Tucker in private. When they were alone in Tucker’s office, Bean asked to officiate the wedding of Blackberry as “Brother Legume”. Bean learned that someone named Tilly had eagerly accepted the job officiating. Bean thought over this unexpected news and knew he would have to find this ‘Tilly’. Before he left, though, he asked Father Tucker for training as a cleric after things calm down.

Bean left for the church kitchen to make another healing feast. On his way, he spotted a crowd outside the window. “Minstrel Verone” was singing a recently written song about the healer “Bean”. The crowd had taken to this song and as it ended they broke out into chanting the final phrase, “GIVE A LIFT!”

After cooking, Bean went to find Tilly, and learned that Tilly thought of the job as a great honor, in her words, “Names will go down in history over this.” She also had a lot of gratitude towards the sherif. Her husband was with the Riverdale guard, add the only reason they got out of the capital when it fell was because of the sheriff.

Bean pushed for the role of officiant, saying that he had received a holy vision. Tilly was reluctant, but was willing to let him have the job if he could pay her 300 gold. If she wasn’t going to be famous then she at least wanted a to be able to buy a house outside town.

Bean left Tilly. He was puzzled over how to handle the situation. It was then that he bumped into a songster skunk, the Minstral Verone. Verone was delighted to meet Bean, the person he had wrote a song about. in Verone’s words, it was, “Such a pleasure to meet a hero in the flesh.” Bean soon sussed out that Verone didn’t like or trust the sherif and was willing to make whatever song that Bean needed.

Next, Bean went back to Tucker. Bean told Tucker about Tilly’s request for 300 gold. Both Bean and Tucker were conflicted. They talked longer, and Bean asked how to actually speak with Sol. Tucker gave Bean an amulet of “Commune” as training wheels.

Sand Trap

Odds spotted Ravina’s paw, just before the sand completely buried them. Quickly, he grabbed rope, threw one end over a support beam and tossed the other to Naul. Naul was just standing there shaking. Odds grabbed his shoulder and told Naul to start calling for help and to keep a hand on the rope to help pull Odds out if he ended up buried, too. Then he tied the rope around his waist and ran to the sand-filled tunnel and started digging.

Ravina, meanwhile, struggle up through the sand, trying to find a pocket of air.

Help quickly arrived. Jasper and Pebble rushed up to help dig. Orla dove into the sand and started tunneling forward. Together they reached Ravina in time and pulled them free. Ravina emerged, coughing and dusty. Odds scooped them up into a big hug and started brushing the sand off. Ravina wiggled free, cast prestidigitation on themself, and was caught in another hug, this time by Pete.

Odds thanks Orla and the others for their help and heroism. He turned to Naul to help the mole calm down.

It wasn’t long after this that Windy arrived with the note from Bean that read, “Guards heading your way. Get rid of Pete, Ravina, and cart.”

Odds, keeping the note secret from the general public, pulled Ravina and Pete into a huddle. They planned a public falling-out and discussed a meet-up location for the upcoming Blackberry heist.

They staged a loud argument about safety, Ravina and Pete were kicked out. They took the stolen cart and left. Odds hid anything left behind that the guards might want to steal.

Later in the day guards did indeed arrive. Jasper and Odds stood side by side as leaders of the community trying to buffer potential damage to their home and people. They convinced the guards that Ravina had been here but left and not on friendly terms.

The guards were curious about the ruins but were distracted when they found the buried root cellar of food. They took some for themselves, then headed out.

More shopping

Jay and Bean had some tasks to take care of in the market district. They picked up Bean’s band at the armory, then purchased: leather armor +1, a spear, a fancy magic bow. They also placed an order for gloves with retractable blades and a magic greatsword.

Next, they went to Whovette and used her services to try to track down Cherla. They failed. They tried to find Bean’s old companion, Soot, and also failed.

Finally they returned to the McCaw, picked up the barrels and cart, and headed home.

The Bastion

When Bean and Jay arrived home, Odds filled them in on the stage fight and the guards arriving. The mood of the camp felt a little dour that evening.

Odds was working on a box bed and found Orla next to him. They started talking. Orla was interested in prayer and Odds told her of his practice with Mella. They talked religion and Odds offered to help her set up a small shrine in the morning. Orla left and Odds picked up a few wood scraps and started carving the holy symbols of a few of the gods he knew: Sol, Mella, Konica, the Father Tree and Tharoom.

Later that night Orla joined Jay and offered to help him study the book he was looking at. He shooed her away from the texts but was willing to let her help clear out the sand-filled tunnel in the ruins.

They quickly cleared the way. Then without checking for traps or telling anyone where they were going, wandered down the hall and found that it emptied into a large sandy geode-room. Orla and Jay wisely retreated before going further.

That night, the first box bed was finished and went to the hoglets.

Ravina and Pete

Nearing town, Ravina and Pete abandoned the carriage and burned it. Ravina disguised themself as Madam Ravi. They offered to disguise Pete but he refused. He decided he would stay outside the city for the next few days.

Madam Ravi snuck into Nottinghill and set up in the Crooked Wheel. Halftail saw through the disguise and approached Ravina. He wasn’t going to turn them in, though. He did want to know when Ravina was planning on causing a ruckus so that he could take his crew and break into the manor house at that time.

Waiting for the heist

The next morning, Bean woke early, found a sunny spot on the hillside and meditated on his amulet of divination. He asked “Are we doing the right thing by breaking Blackberry out?” He saw a vision of ants being pestered by a beetle, then a bird snatching the beetle up and the ants returning to business. The general answer seemed to be ‘probably’.

Odds, with Orla in tow, stumbled upon Bean’s meditation spot. With Bean’s permission, they set up a small stone shrine (waist-high to Orla) and placed the wooden holy symbols inside.

Meanwhile, Jay was sitting in the ruins, contemplating what he had learned while reading. He tracked down Odds and Bean and told them what he learned:

  • Tharoom was an earth god
  • There are probably many active traps in the ruins

He showed them the Geode, and they decided to tackle it after the heist but to seal it off for the time being.

The next few days were waiting for the heist. Throughout the time, Odds prepared for the trip North and worked on beds. Jay and Bean both studied their texts. Jay filled beer barrels.

The Heist

Jay met with Petunia and handed her cat-Bean, then he headed to the city square and Petunia smuggle cat-Bean to Lady Blackberry.

Odds, meanwhile, met with Pete Smalls by the south Gate. They prepped a wagon for smuggling Ravina and Blackberry away.

Bean was delivered to Blackberry and shifted back to himself. He had the maid and lady quickly pack go-bags, then he held them tight and teleported them via phoenix. Poof! Poof! Poof! They appeared and disappeared through town, sowing chaos and drawing the attention of all the guards. They briefly poofed into Ravia’s room, swapped Petunia for Ravina, then poofed into the middle of the marketplace.

There, Ravina made a big speech about the corrupt sheriff who was forcing Blackberry to marry him. They poofed away, but not before throwing out the last card of illusion – summoning up an image of Sir Hiss. Jay stayed behind to help trip up the guards.

Bean summoned a cloud of fog and the small group split from the phoenix – sending it poofing out a different gate then they were going.

Everyone met back at the south gate. Blackberry, Pete, and Petunia were hidden in the cart while Ravina disguised themselves. All-together, they headed to the old fishing shack by the lake.

To maintain the fiction that Ravina was on the outs with the group the party split. Ravina, Petunia, Blackberry and Pete stayed at the shack while the others headed home.

Ben made Ravina do mystery rolls again. (WIS saving throws)
